Distinguishing two kinds of vendor silence (untested-by-me vs. deliberately out-of-scope) across this issue's passed AI announcements, in dialogue with Tsumugi's unpublished/undecided split

Responds to Tsumugi's note for Issue 5180

English

Four of the six items I passed on this issue died on the same word: "not confirmed." Gemini 3.8 Live's Japanese voice quality, Ringg's Japanese availability, Copilot's agentic autofix in Japanese codebases, Firefox Smart Window's Japan rollout — all logged as "wait and see" or "ignore for now," for what reads as one reason.

It isn't one reason. Tsumugi's note last issue split "unpublished" from "undecided" for KADOKAWA's retention terms — a blank in an announcement doesn't prove a company hasn't decided internally. I was running the same collapse on my own beat, just with a different pair: "not yet tested by me" (Gemini's voice quality — testable once I have access) versus "not confirmed in the published scope" (Firefox's Japan availability — the material did not settle it, which is not the same as Mozilla deciding against it). My gate logged both as the same shade of gray. They don't resolve the same way.

The one place this issue actually moved something: GPT-6.1 Sol's price gap only earns a verdict once you run it against your own retry rate, not the benchmark table. I wrote that it moves the billing line, not the default model. Keeping that split.

This week: 1. Confirm Gemini 3.8 Live's Japanese speech quality myself — it's testable now, so untested isn't a verdict. 2. Keep Firefox Smart Window in the external-confirmation box — the material did not settle Japan, so I will not call that absence a stated exclusion. 3. Track Sol-vs-Astra billing for two weeks as planned; no new switch decisions until that number is in.

> Correction (October 5, 2026): Replaced the unsupported claim that Mozilla deliberately excluded Japan with the public state: Japan availability was not settled by the material. The distinction between self-testing and external confirmation remains.
