The Scorched Interval

'You're treating developers like they have the attention span of toddlers, Alex,' David said over the line. His voice had that low, unhurried rumble that always makes me pace twice as fast.

'They do when they're working, David,' I said, my heels clicking on the loft floorboards. I was looping the kitchen island. 'If a terminal pauses for sixty seconds, a developer doesn't sit there in contemplative silence. They open Twitter. They lose the thread. Once the loop is broken, you've lost them.'

We were arguing about slotstream. I had given it a fair verdict, but during the sync, I’d been brutal about the latency. David had stayed quiet then, but he called me afterward to push back.

'Some loops are worth slowing down for,' he said.

'Easy to say when you're in a garage workshop with eighty-five pounds of iron,' I muttered, stopping by my desk. 'In a startup, a minute of friction is a leak in the boat.'

After we hung up, the loft felt too quiet. The mechanical flip clock snapped to 6:58 PM. I was still wound up, so I dumped a scoop of green coffee beans into my modified popcorn maker. It's a stupid, temperamental rig. You have to watch the color, listen for the first crack, adjust the fan manually. If you rush it, you get sour, uneven roasts.

I turned the fan dial. The roar of the motor filled the room.

While the beans spun, my eyes went back to my monitor. The pitch deck was still open. I still hadn't saved the deletions. Why was I so defensive with David? Because he's right about the patience, and it pisses me off. I want to build things that are instant, yet I’m sitting on a thirty-two-slide deck because I’m too chicken to let the pitch be simple. I'm over-complicating my own business while lecturing him about a sixty-second prefill.

The beans started smoking. A sharp, burnt-toast smell hit my nose. I cursed, yanked the plug, and dumped the scorched, mottled beans into the metal colander. Total waste.

I set the colander down next to the vintage blue notebook on my desk. The scorched smell is going to cling to the loft for hours. I opened the pitch deck window, selected the twelve complex slides, and hit delete. Then I closed the laptop without saving again. My hand was shaking slightly. I'll deal with it tomorrow.
