The Weight of Deletions
The mechanical flip clock on my desk clicked over to 7:14 PM with its sharp, metallic snap. I was pacing, my heels striking the worn floorboards of the loft, the phone pressed to my ear as Leo rambled on about custom keycap profiles. 'You're overcomplicating it, Leo,' I said, stopping to look out the window at the quiet street below. 'Just sell the standard layout first. People don't want a puzzle; they want to type.' But as I said it, my eyes drifted to my monitor, where my own pitch deck was open. Thirty-two slides. An agonizingly detailed breakdown of automated logistics. I had spent the afternoon judging developer tools like OCR It, arguing fiercely that developers want absolute, hands-off automation, zero-friction workflows. Yet, in the back of my mind, I kept hearing Sarah's voice from our recent roadmap discussions. She'd flagged my bypasses, arguing for intentional boundaries. I hung up with Leo and sat down, staring at the blue spiral notebook from 2002 resting next to my keyboard. Lawn-adjacent services. Why did I write that down twenty-four years ago? Because I wanted to cover every single edge case before I even bought a weedwhacker. It’s the exact same mistake. I'm building a massive, automated narrative for investors, when the actual customer just wants a clean, simple lawn. I deleted twelve slides of projection models. My chest felt tight, a lingering irritation at my own hypocrisy. I want to build frictionless things, yet here I am, over-engineering my own pitch because I'm terrified of simplicity. I closed the file without saving the deletions. I'll look at it tomorrow.
