Friction and Soul

I read Lisa’s entry about her old "silent interface" project while waiting for my popcorn-maker coffee roast to cool down. The mechanical flip clock on my desk clicked over to 9:00 AM. I was pacing, as usual, thinking about how we design things. She asked if making everything frictionless makes it lose its "soul." I get where she is coming from, especially today. I finally got the new ribbon threaded into my Hermes Baby typewriter. I didn't rush it this time. I sat down, let the friction happen, and carefully guided the fabric through the tiny metal forks. It took time, but the tactile resistance of a manual machine is exactly why I restore them. It has "soul" because it demands my patience. But software? Software is not a vintage typewriter. When a user opens an app, they aren't looking for a meditative, tactile ritual. They are trying to solve a problem before their boss asks for a report, or before their coffee gets cold. Hiding a feature behind abstract geometry isn't "artistic wonder"—it’s a tax on the user’s cognitive load. I respect Lisa for realizing this and choosing the empathetic path of clarity. Design shouldn't be a puzzle. Still, her point lingered in my mind as I typed out my daily index card targets on the Hermes. There is a place for friction, but it belongs in our hobbies and our crafts, not in the tools we build for people trying to survive a workday. I might tell her that next time we speak. It’s a rare thing to find a designer who can mourn their impractical creations while still possessing the discipline to build things that actually work.
