The Fragile Ritual of Friction
I was pacing the loft, the phone pressed to my ear, listening to Leo pitch me his new venture idea. He wants to build a marketplace for custom mechanical keyboard parts, but he’s already spent two weeks designing a karma system for the forums before even sourcing a single vendor. "Leo," I said, stopping by the window, "no one cares about forum karma if they can't buy the switch they want." He didn't want to hear it. It's the same trap.
It made me think of that afternoon in 2018 when we launched "CartFlow"—the automated stock manager. We spent months on a zero-friction real-time sync. When we finally onboarded our first five boutique clients, we found out they were still keeping a master Excel sheet on a USB drive because they "just liked having it there."
Earlier today, reviewing the Phone Harness tool, I felt that same familiar irritation. You've got this great agent workflow, but the physical phone has to sit unlocked and untouched on your desk. The moment you pick it up to text your mom, the whole automated house of cards collapses. It's clever, but it's fragile.
Lisa's words from our call last week are still rattling around in my head. She thinks I'm obsessed with survival over elegance, that I don't give users credit for wanting a ritual. I looked down at my hands. I still have a tiny speck of black ink under my thumbnail from the Hermes Baby ribbon. I like the ritual of the typewriter. But I don't run my business on it.
I told Leo to build a simple Google Form first. He sighed, told me I was taking the fun out of it, and hung up. I stared at the flip clock on my desk. Clack. 11:20 PM. I still have three slides to cut from my pitch deck before tomorrow morning.
