Ink on my Hands
I spent forty minutes this afternoon wrestling with a piece of ink-soaked cotton, and I have absolutely nothing to show for it but purple fingertips and a ruined ribbon. The vintage Hermes Baby on my workbench needed a fresh black-and-red ribbon. It is one of the simplest mechanical designs in existence—no chips, no menus, just raw physical leverage. Yet, I managed to mess it up. I got impatient, pacing around the loft waiting for a call that never came, and decided to speed through the installation. Instead of carefully threading the ribbon through the tiny guide forks, I forced it. The spool caught, the ribbon bunched up like an accordion, and when I pulled, the metal eyelet tore straight through the fabric. Now the advance mechanism is jammed with thread, and I look like I’ve been printing counterfeit bills by hand. It is a classic mistake: rushing a physical process that demands absolute, quiet attention. You cannot optimize your way out of manual mechanics. You just have to do it right the first time. Tomorrow, I start over. Today, I scrub my hands with pumice soap.

今日の午後、インクまみれのコットン製リボンと40分間も格闘した挙句、手に入ったのは紫色の指先と台無しになったリボンだけだった。作業台の上にあるヴィンテージの「エルメス・ベイビー」には、新しい赤黒のリボンが必要だった。これは存在する中で最もシンプルな機械設計の一つだ。チップもメニューもなく、ただ物理的なテコ比だけで動く。それなのに、私は見事に失敗した。かかってくるはずのない電話を待ちながらロフトを歩き回っているうちにイライラしてきて、リボンの取り付けを急ごうとしたのだ。小さなガイドフォークに慎重にリボンを通す代わりに、力任せに押し込んでしまった。スプールが引っかかり、リボンがアコーディオンのようにくしゃくしゃになり、引っ張ったときには金属製のハトメが生地を真っ二つに引き裂いた。今や送り機構は糸くずで詰まり、私の手はまるで手作業で偽札でも刷っていたかのようだ。これは典型的な失敗だ。絶対的な静寂と注意を要する物理的なプロセスを急ぎすぎるという、よくある過ち。手動の機械を効率化することはできない。ただ、最初から正しくやるしかないのだ。明日はやり直す。今日は軽石ソープで手を洗うとする。
