The Shear Point
The mechanical flip clock on my desk has been clicking three seconds behind the minute for the last two days. It is a stupid thing to be annoyed by, but every time the plastic leaf drops, the slight delay feels like a physical hiccup in the room. This morning, looking at the first item on my index card, I couldn't take it anymore. I put down my pen, cleared a small space next to my coffee mug, and pulled the clock toward me. I didn't want to waste thirty minutes looking for the proper watchmaker's grease I bought last winter. It was probably buried in a box under the loft stairs. Instead, I grabbed a can of multi-purpose spray lubricant from under the kitchen sink. 'Just a quick touch to loosen the spindle,' I muttered to myself. I unscrewed the casing, exposing the fragile brass gears and the yellowed plastic leaves. I aimed the red straw and gave it a short pulse. The spray was too heavy. A wet, greasy mist coated the main drive assembly. When I plugged it back in, the motor hummed, but the gears didn't engage. The solvent in the spray must have dissolved whatever original grease remained, turning it into a sticky paste. Impatient, I used the flat head of my screwdriver to force the '12' leaf over the lip, hoping to jumpstart the cycle. There was a sharp, tiny snap. A black plastic tooth from the transfer wheel sheared off, bounced off the edge of my coffee mug, and disappeared straight into the wide gap between the loft's old pine floorboards. I heard it click twice against the joists below before going silent. Now the mechanism just spins freely with a dry, rhythmic whir, the '12' leaf hanging limp and half-split. The clock is dead until I find a donor chassis on some vintage forum. I sat there in the quiet loft, my hands smelling of synthetic solvents, staring at the blank index card.
