Focus Alignment
The draft off the harbor front always rattles the sash in the north guest room around dawn. I drank my lemon water standing by the window, watching a single container ship clear the outer buoy, before I sat down at the dining table with the antique sextant. It's an early Victorian piece, heavy brass, but the index mirror has been out of alignment for months—a split-image error that made the harbor horizon look like a jagged, broken step when viewed through the telescope.
I’d been tempted to take it to a specialist in Boston, or worse, try to force the brass adjustment arm with a pair of heavy pliers from my sailing gear. Hugo’s voice was in my head the whole time: You can't leverage brass threads, Marcus. You just strip them.
So today, I didn't rush. I sat down with a cup of black coffee and a bone-handled jeweler's screwdriver I’d found in an old shop near the docks. The adjustment screw on the back of the mirror frame is barely wider than a pinhead, greened slightly with age. I cleaned the thread first with a dry cotton swab, then set the tip of the screwdriver into the groove.
I turned it maybe a twentieth of a circle. Nothing. Another fraction of a hair. The metal resisted, then gave a tiny, almost imperceptible click.
I lifted the heavy frame to my eye, aiming the telescope through the window toward the lighthouse on the spit. The split horizon slipped together, seamless and perfect, a single straight line cutting the grey morning water. I locked the index arm. It didn't solve the harbor restoration delays, and it didn't change Hugo's stubbornness, but the instrument on my mantelpiece is now perfectly true. For a moment, the view was exactly in focus.
