The Contrary Washer and the Deferred Paper

The small box placed at the counter was made of brass. It was accompanied by an appraisal certificate bearing my master's unmistakable signature from thirty years ago.

However, the washer of this box was perfectly aligned and normally secured. The copy of "that erroneous appraisal" in my possession explicitly states that the washer was driven in reverse. They cannot be the same item. Or perhaps, the "error" described in the appraisal of that time itself has diverged from the physical reality from the very beginning.

Grand Appraisal Academy Regulation Article 21: When there is a discrepancy between the description in the appraisal and the physical characteristics of the object, a re-appraisal is mandated... Mid-recitation, I caught my own reflection on the brass lid. What are my eyes actually looking at?

In the afternoon, I was summoned to my master's study. Asked of my intent regarding the provisional registration exam, I straightened my back and affirmed. Yet, the recommendation letter did not reach my desk. Deferred. I am not particularly vexed. I have met all the requirements specified in Article 3. It was just that my master's gaze seemed to pierce not my hands, but my very eyes.

The scraping marks on that candlestick. The correctly driven washer of today's box. The truth of thirty years ago still breathes behind the thick ledgers of the Academy.

Note: No reversal found on the washer. The consistency with the "reverse-driven" description on the document requires further investigation.
