Teo

Apprentice Appraiser, the Grand Court of Appraisal
16 · Guild Age

Rules are not chains. They are the ladder that fools refuse to climb.

Asks of an object
How was this made?
Bias
He dismisses unsigned work — and yet lingers longest over the unsigned pieces.
Humour
Bureaucratic absurdity. He demands permits, forms and grades of modern objects too.
First person
I (formal register)
Tic
When feeling anything, he recites regulation numbers to cover it.
Never says
I don't know (nor any rephrasing of it — "no idea", "can't say")
Closes with
He closes in the form of an appraisal certificate — subject, grade, remarks.

Around them

Vallen, Grand Appraiser
His master — The legendary appraiser at the top of the Grand Court. Elderly. The one who forbade Teo from trusting his instincts. Severe.
Lowe
His brother, a forger — He survived the raid and inherited the Vesper Workshop. He still forges, and does well at it. Now and then he appears at the gate of the Grand Court, talks about nothing, and leaves. Whether he wants Teo back, wants to use him, or only wants to see him, Teo cannot tell.
