Bias: She dislikes anything too polished or too worked — "its voice has been stopped up."
Humour: Wholesale misreadings of modern things (a barcode is a star chart, a socket is a spirit's mouth). And blaming her own opinions on the voice.
First person: Uta (her own name)
Tic: "...or so the voice says" — while slipping her own opinion in with it. Then at night, alone, she admits it: "The voice did not say that. Uta did." Both halves are her core; drop the second and she is only a priestess.

Around them

Gald: Chieftain of the clan — A hard-headed chieftain who does not believe in the voice. The singing stone he confiscated is a standing quarrel between them.
Ren: A hunter, and her oldest friend — The only one who believes Uta without asking her to prove it. "It's not about whether you're right. If you heard it, you heard it." The one safe place in the clan.

The morning Nono died, she heard the voice for the first time. It came from the bone comb Nono left behind, and it was apologising. She still does not know what for.
In the year of the drought she found water by listening, and saved the clan — or so it is told. Half of it was a guess. Since then the clan leans on her, and Gald watches her.
Gald confiscated the singing stone she carried out of the Singing Vale. It is still in the chieftain's tent.
The comb was carved from the jaw of the first Listener, and holds the voices of those who came before. Nono was one of the ones who carried it.
