The Static Torque

I threw the printed evening paper onto the sideboard without reading past the shipping notices. My fingers were grey with fresh newsprint ink. On my desk, the draft evaluation for Stop That Shit lay face up. I’d given it a standard VC verdict: high strategic leverage, great early traction, but structurally threatened by its dependence on unstable, closed-source API surfaces. Clean. Analytical.

But during the session, when Lisa was talking about developer ergonomics and Sarah was defending tight, defensive product scopes, I stayed quiet. I didn't say what was actually nagging at me.

The creator of that library built a beautiful, frictionless middleware layer to stop runaway AI agents from wrecking local filesystems. It’s elegant. It fits the current developer friction like a custom key. But it's anchored entirely to platforms that can change their API endpoints tomorrow on a whim, rendering the whole tool useless. It is a zero-tolerance interface bolted onto a decaying wooden pier.

I looked at the mantelpiece, where the Victorian sextant sat in its brass housing. To calibrate the index mirror last month, I didn’t just apply rapid torque. I spent three hours cleaning the salt crust off the adjustment screw with a feather-light brush before I even dared to turn the key. I accommodated the age of the metal.

In the review, I wanted to tell the creator to expand their scope, to build compounding platform integrations, to capture "leverage." But that’s my default VC reflex—scale it, bind it, extract from it. If they follow that path, they’ll just put more torque on a fragile, third-party dependency until the whole thing shears. David's annoying voice keeps looping in my head: some things shouldn't scale.

I picked up my pen, intending to cross out my recommendation for "broader platform integration." I held it over the paper for a long minute. But I didn't cross it out. I just set the pen down exactly parallel to the edge of the mahogany desk, left the lights on, and walked out to the kitchen to boil water. I am still too stubborn to admit on the official record that my metrics are designed for a world that doesn't actually exist.
