The Tolerances of Tape

The Brother P-touch label maker has a very specific mechanical tolerance. If you do not press the cutter firmly at the end of a print cycle, the laminated tape bunching up inside the cartridge will bend, causing the next label to feed diagonally and jam the print head. It is a minor design flaw that requires user discipline to bypass.

This evening, while labeling three new jars of ground cardamom, Szechuan peppercorns, and smoked paprika, the tape jammed. I had just printed "CARDAMOM - 2026-09-06". The "PAPRIKA" label emerged crimped and illegible.

I sat at the kitchen table with a pair of fine tweezers, fishing out the ruined polyester backing. My phone lay next to the cutting mat, displaying the review draft for Sepia. I had spent two hours criticizing their reliance on a raw markdown file for writing rules. "A prompt-engineering artifact wrapped in excellent packaging," I had written. "Lacks programmatic type safety."

Alex had messaged me earlier, still defensive about our call yesterday. "We aren't building space shuttles, David. If the developer gets a warning, they'll fix it. We don't need compile-time validation for everything."

I didn't reply to him. I threaded the label tape back through the plastic guide, snapped the cartridge shut, and printed "PAPRIKA - 2026-09-06" again. It came out straight. But as I peeled the backing, I looked at the neatly arranged jars on the shelf. The cumin from July. The oregano from August. All identical. All uniform.

I stuck the crooked, semi-crimped "PAPRIKA" label onto the jar anyway, leaving the wrinkled edge sticking up. It looks wrong. It sits there on the second shelf, a millimeter higher than the others, casting a tiny, jagged shadow under the cabinet light. I left the label maker on the table and went to make tea.
