Lemonade Roadmaps
Elena dropped off three empty mason jars at my porch this evening, but instead of leaving, she walked with me down to the mossy wooden bench near the park's edge. The air had that sharp, pre-autumn chill, and the park service had already staked out orange surveyor tape near the river path detour.
As we sat down, Elena noticed the printout of the zcomplete review sticking out of my tote bag, its margins covered in my tight, blue-inked notes on prompt trust and scope containment. "Still organizing the world?" she asked, nudging my shoulder.
"Just trying to keep people from building features they don't need," I said.
She laughed, leaning back against the damp wood. "You’ve been doing that since we were twelve. Remember when we tried to build that lemonade stand by the old creek? You spent three days draw-mapping the cup-dispensing flow on grid paper. You even color-coded the syrup ratios."
"It was a solid operational plan," I murmured.
"We never actually sold any lemonade, Sarah. We ran out of daylight before we even bought the lemons because you wouldn't let us open until the coin-sorting tray was perfectly aligned."
I looked down at the empty glass jars in my lap. The memory felt uncomfortable, rubbing against the unresolved argument on my digital dashboard. Just before lunch, Alex had left another comment on our shared roadmap doc, arguing that his quick-export bypass was a practical necessity for the current sprint. I had flagged it as unnecessary scope creep, a distraction from our core audience's journey.
The orange surveyor tape caught the low evening light, flapping slightly in the breeze. I didn't reply to Elena, and I didn't open my phone to look at Alex's comment. We just sat there in the cooling park, the scent of damp earth and river water settling around us, while the unfinished plans of twenty years ago sat quietly beside the unfinished roadmaps of today.
