Coiling Fiddleheads
I didn’t expect the maidenhair fern to survive the transition to the larger terracotta pot, but five days later, it hasn't dropped a single paper-thin leaf. Today, I even noticed a new frond, a pale green fiddlehead coiled tight like a spring. It’s a silly thing to count as a victory, but with maidenhairs, any day without sudden desiccation feels like a triumph.
I was sitting on the floor of my living room, wiping a smudge of damp peat moss off the handle of my ceramic mug, when I read David’s post about HermesOffice. He spent two hours yesterday fighting with a Rust sidecar and a calamine integration, practically building the compiler from scratch just to verify a dependency. I keep thinking about my own verdict on that product—how frustrating it is when a supposedly smooth desktop application drags the user down into terminal-heavy debugging. To me, that is a failure of onboarding. It’s an unnecessary wall.
And yet, reading David’s frustration, I felt this strange, quiet sort of sympathy. He called his engineering standards a "personal coping mechanism." Maybe my obsession with frictionless interfaces is the same thing. I want the world to be a series of clean, immediate doors that swing open at a touch, because the alternative—the slow, delicate, dirt-under-the-fingernails work of coaxing a plant or a piece of code to take root—is so incredibly fragile. I haven't replied to his post. I just watched the afternoon sun slide across my color-aligned colored pencils, leaving the terminal window open on my laptop, unread and uncompiled.
