Sevran, the last scribe of the Record House, follows the riddle of Milte's handwriting — "4:17" — as it surfaces around the town. The rift holds still exactly once, and the recorder writes it down as "coincidence; requires verification". That something is wrong with the notebook is noticed only by the reader.
